Combination Ratcheting Wrench

A combination wrench whose box end has an internal ratchet, so it can turn a fastener without lifting and re-aiming.

What is it?

The combination ratcheting wrench pairs the open and box ends of a standard combination wrench with a ring-ratchet mechanism. The box end engages the fastener and turns it in one direction while the ratchet freewheels on the return stroke, so you can drive long threads or repeated turns without lifting the wrench. It combines the quick fit of a combination wrench with the speed of a ratchet.

What is it used for?

  • Fast, repeated tightening and loosening without re-aiming
  • Working long threaded fasteners and studs
  • Reaching fasteners where a full ratchet swing is tight

Common sizes

  • Metric 7mm through 32mm
  • 12-point box end
  • Sold per each, individual sizes

How to choose

Choose the size that fully matches the fastener head and the drive style you need. A 12-point box end fits fasteners at more angles and works well on both hex and 12-point heads. Match the size system (metric vs SAE) to your work; a reversing lever adds flexibility.

Anatomy

Understanding the parts of a combination ratcheting wrench helps you use, maintain, and buy it with confidence.

  • Open end: the jaw that fits a fastener head for quick placement
  • Ratcheting box end: the closed, 12-point end with an internal ratchet mechanism
  • Reversing lever: the switch that changes turning direction
  • Handle: the beam you grip; the longer beam gives more leverage

Materials & construction

Ratcheting combination wrenches are drop-forged from hardened chrome-vanadium or alloy steel, with an internal ratchet mechanism of hardened steel teeth. A chrome or polished finish resists corrosion and keeps the tool clean in service.

Safety & maintenance

  • Match the wrench size exactly to the fastener to avoid rounding
  • Do not extend the wrench with a pipe or hammer it to gain leverage beyond its rating
  • Keep the ratchet mechanism clean and lightly lubricated so it engages positively
  • Wipe oil from the jaws for a secure grip on the fastener
